Phacelia bipinnatifida, also known as Fernleaf phacelia, is a native biennial forb that spreads readily by seed. Phacelia grows in partial-shade to shady environments, perfect for woodlands or woodland edges. Leaves and flowers of Phacelia emerge in early to mid-spring creating a blanket of light purplish to blue mosaics in the woodland landscape. Their foliage is a beautiful bright spring green, which is deeply lobed, giving it its common name, Fernleaf phacelia. Seed set occurs in early June, casting hundreds of fresh seeds which germinate irregularly from August-October. Each seedling forms an overwintering rosette which will bloom the following spring. Phacelia attract early spring pollinators, like butterflies, skippers, and native bee species all hungry after a long winter.
