Nuphar advena

Spatterdock

Spatterdock is a member of the native floating leaf aquatic community. Nuphar occurs in quiet back waters along tidal creeks and rivers as well as inland ponds and swamps. It has a oval heart shaped leaves that provide cover and shade for fish and an interesting golf ball size or smaller yellow globe like flower. Nuphar grows from a rhizome anchored in the bottom sediments and is a favorite food of beavers and muskrats. Frequently you can find the rhizomes floating in large mats after a beaver cut it from the bottom.
