Sporobolus heterolepis

Prairie Drop Seed

Sporobolus heterolepis, Prairie dropseed, is a warm-season, clump-forming native grass which typically occurs in prairies, glades, and open disturbed spaces. The foliage of Sporobolus heterolepis is medium green and is finely textured and gracefully arching. Prairie Dropseed grows 1-2' tall and sends whispy 2-3' stalks topped with open fragrant panicles arching for the sun in mid August-September. In late fall the golden bronze foliage and light airy dry seed heads are well loved by songbirds for food and nesting material, while providing visual winter intrest in the garden. Sporobolus heterolepis grows well in a wide range of soil types and is drought tolerant and long lived once established.
