Heuchera americana, commonly known as Coral bells or American alumroot, is a leafy, semi-evergreen perennial. Leaves emerge from a low central crown, unfolding in a spiralling mound of attractive green and silver mottled foliage. American alumroot grows 1-2' tall by 1' wide. Heuchera americana grows best in dappled sun to partial shade, in well-drained soils. Heuchera americana is a great flowering groundcover, blooming May through June with a white terminal panicle. Once flowers fade, an attractive dried seed panicle is left. Heuchera americana is tolerant of juglone, and is undesirable to deer and other herbivores.
